Nike, EA Sports Drop New Rochelle's Ray Rice, Fans Can Exchange Jersey

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Just when it looked as though Ray Rice had hit rock bottom following his release and indefinite suspension, the hits kept on coming for the former New Rochelle High School football star.

Rice was released from his Baltimore Ravens contract on Monday and suspended by the National Football League after the celebrity news website TMZ aired an incriminating video showing him viciously knocking his then-fiancée Janay Palmer of Mount Vernon unconscious in an Atlantic City elevator following an altercation.

Former sponsor Nike dropped him and EA Sports announced he would be removed from the popular Madden NFL 15 video game on Friday, citing his indefinite suspension. In addition, the Baltimore Ravens are giving fans the opportunity to exchange their Ray Rice jerseys at the team stores at M&T Bank Stadium.

Also Tuesday, reports surfaced that a longer, more detailed version of the video exists. It reportedly includes some audio and shows the two shouting obscenities at one another and Palmer spitting in the running back’s face before he throws the haymaker.

Initially, Rice was only suspended for two games – which would have made him eligible for reinstatement Friday – when a video surfaced showing him carrying his unconscious wife out of the elevator. The indefinite suspension handed down by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Monday came after the second video emerged, showing the heinous nature of the crime.

Rice’s altercation, and Goodell’s subsequent handling of it forced the NFL to alter its policies regarding domestic abuse last month. Now, any player guilty of domestic abuse gets an automatic six-game suspension. Then if he is found guilty a second time, his time in the NFL is over.
