GREENBURGH, N.Y. - - Area high schools won't open until after Labor Day but local playing fields were alive Monday.

Players and coaches ran football drills as the Section 1 Westchester summer practice season began at Woodlands, Ardsley, Hastings, Dobbs Ferry and Edgemont high schools. Student athletes joined dozens of other Westchester teams on the first day of practice as the players enjoyed cooler temperatures than normal.

Woodlands High School is looking to repeat last year's success when the Falcons won the Section 1 Class C title with a 9-1 record, while Edgemont looks to improve on last year's 4-4 record under coach Matt Bernstein.

"We have 22 players out, down a bout six from last year," said Woodlands head coach Mike Meade said as he team went through play drills at the team's Hartsdale campus. "We have fewer players but a lot of talent."

Dobbs Ferry, 5-3 last year under coach Jim Moran, is hoping to return to form after winning the state Class C title in 2011. Ardsley will be working to challenge for league titles after a 5-3 record under coach Colin Maier in 2012. Coach Chris Wagner gets his Hastings team ready to improve on a 1-7 record.
