Scarsdale Wrestlers Rally Past Edgemont

SCARSDALE, N.Y. - It was not the start Scarsdale was planning on against Edgemont on Friday, in its annual wrestling match for the Bronx River Cup.

The Raiders found themselves trailing by 18 points through three matches before Dan Jureller got the ball rolling. Jureller initiated a string of five wins in the next six bouts, fueling Scarsdale to a 46-30 victory over Edgemont.

The Raiders concluded the regular season by regaining the cup and will now prepare for the Section 1 Division I Wrestling Championships qualifier on Saturday, Feb. 4. The Raiders will be at Horace Greeley.

Edgemont’s Tyler (106 pounds), Trey Aslanian (113) and Max Abramsky (120) opened with pins for a quick, 18-0 lead. Jureller halted Edgemont’s momentum with a 12-3 in the 126-pound bout. John Tambunting (132) and Joe Koshakow (138) followed with wins, 12-3 and 9-4, respectively, making the score 18-10.

Jack McCormack (145) stopped Scarsdale’s run with a 6-1 win, but it was brief. Chen Shen (152) and Brian Hackel (160) registered pins, giving Scarsdale the lead for good at 22-21. Shen fought off his back and the pin attempt of Ross Kantor.

Hackel, who clinched Scarsdale’s win over Croton, Wednesday, finished his match in the second period.

“Brian and Chen really came up big with the pins,” senior and captain Jacob Berkowitz said. “Chen showed great determination to get off of his back and pick up a pin for us. It showed how much winning his match meant to him and the team. “Winning the cup let’s us go out on a win and it feels great.”

Berkowitz and fellow captain Jack Braun both received forfeits.
