Sherman Park Little League Juniors Rout Elmsford

WEST HARRISON, N.Y. – Sherman Park Little League pitcher Peter McBride had quite a night Friday, pitching a gem and scoring five RBIs in Sherman Park’s 12-1 win against Elmsford.

The victory came in the first round of the New York District 20 Little League Junior division tournament at Silver Lake Park in West Harrison.

Sherman Park will face the winner of the Kensico-White Plains match-up, which immediately followed Sherman Park’s victory. That game will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Silver Lake Park. Elmsford will face the loser of Friday night’s second game on Saturday shortly afterward on the same field.

The blowout win Friday night gave McBride and his teammates confidence going forward in the double-elimination tournament.

“I think we have a pretty good chance at winning tomorrow and whatever games follow,” McBride said.

Centerfielder John Michael Picciano praised his teammate after the game.

“He did great pitching. Defense backed him up behind him,” Picciano said. “It turned out good.”

But Picciano knows that one game does not guarantee success in the entire tournament. A couple of poor performances can mean the difference between a championship and an early exit.

“I think we have a good chance to win. Defense has to be good, pitching, hitting, all-around,” Picciano said. “Everything has to be good.”

Elmsford coach Peter Howard stuck around to watch the Kensico-White Plains match-up that followed his team’s loss. Howard wanted to get a read on his team’s next opponent and said Elmsford’s goal is still within reach.

“Going forward, we have our work cut for us. We’re going to be here tomorrow,” Howard said. “We’re going to play the loser of this game. And our intention is to come in, and we’re going to win four in a row.”
