Top Stories 2012: Woodlands High School Sports

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – As 2012 draws to an end, The Greenburgh Daily Voice is looking back at some of the top sports stories of the year .

The Woodlands High School football team had a nearly perfect season, rolling to a 7-0 regular season and the school's first Section 1 title in 19 years before falling in the state regional quarterfinals.

Coach Mike Meade used a high-powered offense led by quarterback Justin Riccio and a group of seedy running backs and receivers to pile up points and victories. The Falcons defeated previously unbeaten Rye Neck, 35-0, in the Section 1 Class C title game in late November.

When Hurricane Sandy delayed the postseason schedule, Woodlands was forced to play the state regional without Meade, whose son was being married on game day. Woodlands lost the game to upstate O'Neill, 35-17, without its head coach.

In March, the Alexander Hamilton girls basketball team won it's first Section 1 basketball title since 1988 . MaIa Hood, who was named the tournament most valuable player, and teammates Ayanna Behagen and Jasmine Robinson helped lead the Red Raiders.

In wrestling, Edgemont High School senior Trey Aslanian became the all-time wins leader i n program history. Aslanian, a five-year varsity wrestler and twice a New York State Division II finalist broke the previous school record of 155 wins.
