Brody McGuinn, a Valhalla resident, was an integral member of the Horace Mann Lions,  a prep school in Riverdale. Horace Mann plays schools like Hackley and Rye Country Day and finished 3-5 in the regular season.

In the championship, Horace Mann lost to Dalton 28-26 when Dalton prevented a two-point conversion attempt at the last second. The game was played at Randall's Island.

McGuinn said Horace Mann does not recruit players, placing high standards on academics.

"Entrance standards are extremely rigorous," McGuinn said. "This is one reason why our success on the athletic fields is so celebrated."

Before coming to Horace Mann, McGuinn played for the Valhalla Jr. Vikings and a Pop Warner team in White Plains. To stay in shape, he works out almost daily at Crossfit XT in Hawthorne to increase his strength.

"The daily workouts are grueling," McGuinn said. "My deadlifts and squats are really improvng, as well as my agility work."

McGuinn also plays for the Horace Mann lacrosse team. Though he always makes sure he's successful off the field as well.

"Keeping good grades at Horace Mann is a priority," McGuinn said. "Anything less than a B results in a progress report being sent home and a parent meeting is required. Academics always come first."
