Woodlands Boys to Be Honored for Sportsmanship

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The Woodlands High School boys varsity basketball team, head coach Robert Murphy and Athletic Director Matthew Smith will all be honored with a prestigious sportsmanship award next month.

Greenburgh school officials announced that the Westchester County Chapter of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials will be presenting the 10th annual Dennis T. Hurlie Sportsmanship Award to the Woodlands team at halftime of the March 4 Section 1 Class AA finals at the Westchester County Center in White Plains.

The award is given to a high school boys varsity basketball team in Westchester that has demonstrated hard work, fair play, cohesiveness, team spirit and sportsmanship.

In 2002, the basketball officials board decided to create a sportsmanship award in honor of Hurlie, a former president of the board for more than 37 years and a frequent official at Section 1 boys basketball tournament games.

Woodlands, which finished 13-5 in the regular season this year, will host North Salem tonight at 7 p.m. in the first round of the sectionals tournament.
