His team will face Section 9 champion O’Neill in the regional playoffs on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Meade’s son is getting married Friday and assistant coach Frank Meade is the best man. The ceremony is at 1:30 p.m. and the reception is at 6 p.m.
Woodlands petitioned to reschedule the game but the BOCES executive office, which would have to make the decision, has yet to allow the switch.
Section 1 football chairperson Chuck Scarpulla said the section and the New York State Public High School Athletic Association officials did all they could to make it work.
“Why they can’t move it, I’m not sure,” Scarpulla said. “They’ve been trying everything they can to accommodate everybody with this turmoil that they’re in.”
Scarpulla said the schedule has been set for a while but that officials met about the conflict.
“I just get it when it comes to me,” Scarpulla said. “They had a meeting with the regional people. It’s been on the books for six months.”
Scarpulla is also the athletic director at Sleepy Hollow High School. He has not missed a football game in four years but will not attend the Horsemen’s Class A section championship game against Somers on Wednesday night because he has a conflict of his own.
He will sponsor his grandson at his confirmation in Albany on Wednesday night, so he of all people understands Meade’s situation, he said.
“Do I want to be at the confirmation? Yeah. Do I want to be at the game? Yeah, I do,” Scarpulla said.
