Woodlands Football's Barber, Meade Stick Together

HARTSDALE, N.Y. – Woodlands High School junior running back Tyrone Barber and head coach Mike Meade led the Falcons to an undefeated football season with a victory against Tuckahoe on Saturday.

That game was a high point in a journey the two men have taken together since they worked together at Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, where Meade coached prior to Woodlands.

Barber accumulated more than 400 yards of total offense and had five touchdowns in the Falcons’ 47-13 rout of Tuckahoe. The junior had kickoff returns for touchdowns of 99 and 75 yards.

“He’s dangerous anytime he holds the ball,” Meade said. “He’s making plays happen by himself when there’s no blocking.”

Barber spoke humbly after the game despite his electrifying performance. He credited the seniors on the team for blocking for him and opening up running lanes and gave full credit to Meade and the coaching staff for their work.

Meade took over as head coach at Woodlands in 2011 and is in just his second season at the helm. Barber transferred from Roosevelt to Woodlands to be with his coach and Meade has helped the young running back grow throughout his high school career.

“I’m proud of the way he’s developed,” Meade said. “Not so much on the field, but off the field. He’s a great student, too.”

Top-seeded Woodlands will host its first playoff game in more than 25 years on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against fourth-seeded Bronxville. Barber and Meade will try to add another highlight to their history.

When asked if he had always seen such potential in Barber, Meade said it might just be the other way around.

“I don’t know if I’ve seen it in him or if he’s seen it in me,” Meade said, “because he chased me over here.”
