Woodlands Grad Reece Williams Heads To NCAA Hoop Tournament With Albany

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Woodlands High graduate Reece Williams, a walk-on player with the University of Albany, reached the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament for the second straight year when the Great Danes defeated Stony Brook Saturday to win the America East Conference title.

Albany (18-14) topped Stony Brook 69-60 with a late run after the lead changed hands several times in a closely played second half. The Danes will find out who they play in the tournament's opening round when pairings are released Sunday afternoon.

Williams, a White Plains native who played at Woodlands for three years, made the Albany team last year as a freshman. He has brought some luck to the Danes, who have won back-to-back titles and earned another automatic bid to March Madness.

A 2012 graduate, Williams averaged 15 points and nine rebounds as a senior. He helped lead Woodlands to the 2010 Section 1 Class B title.

Williams' parents, Terry and Gayle Williams, watched the game, which was played in Long Island, at home with family.

"I'm really happy for Reece and his teammates," Terry Williams said. "It's always been a dream of his to be part of an NCAA team. To have it happen twice is special because he understands how difficult it is to get back there. As a parent, you're always happy to see your child reach a goal."
