When Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner told the public he was worried about the elderly and sick who are struggling without power, Gardner decided she needed to find a way to help.
"Paul knew that I had my house open to people. He called me saying an older woman had walked into his office and said, 'I'm cold,'" Gardner said. "Right away, I said, 'I'll come get her.'"
Gardner, who works at Regency Extended Care in Yonkers, has also provided meals for her neighbors that haven't had power for four days. She said she was "in pain" knowing there were so many people without a warm place to stay while she and her husband had plenty of room in their three-story townhouse.
"I don't feel good about sitting here warm and fed with ample space for people to be comfortable in, knowing that people are struggling," she said.
The 9,000 Greenburgh residents that remained without power Friday don't have local hotels to turn to for temporary shelter, either. All listed hotels in Elmsford and Greenburgh are either booked or have no power.
Bobby Patel, an employee at the Alexander Motel, said all the rooms are completely occupied. The motel doesn't expect any openings until at least next Thursday, he said.
Feiner is now seeking volunteers for "House Angels" - like Gardner - who are interested in temporarily housing people who need it. Greenburgh residents who still have power and an extra room in their house can email Feiner at pfeiner@greenburghny.com to sign up for the program.
