County Collecting Old Prescriptions Saturday

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Westchester residents are encouraged to participate in national "prescription drug take back" day Saturday by disposing of old, unused medicine that could wind up in the hands of abusers.

"Prescription drugs are now the second most abused category of drugs in the United States, and we know that some teens are getting those drugs from medicine cabinets of friends and family," County Executive Robert Astorino said in a statement. "I urge everyone to clean out their medicine cabinets."

Both prescription and over the counter medications should be kept in their original container so those at designated drop-off locations know how to dispose of their contents.

Hypodermic needles will not be accepted. The county suggests placing them in a puncture-proof container and throwing them in the garbage.

Westchester County has teamed up with local governments, police departments, the Westchester Coalition for Drug and Alcohol Free Youth, and the county's Office of Drug Prevention and Stop DWI to offer drug disposal assistance at 12 locations throughout the county.

Disposal services will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the following locations:- Outside the RiteAid Pharmacy at 871 Saw Mill River Rd. in Ardsley- The Croton Commons Parking Lot at 171 through 187 South Riverside Ave.- The Tuckahoe Community Center located at 71 Columbus Ave.- The Town of Mamaroneck Police Department at 740 Boston Post Rd.- The Mount Kisco Police Station located at the intersection of Moger Avenue and Green Street- The lobby of the Ossining Village Court at 86 Spring St.- The Village of Pelham Police station located at 34 5th Ave.- The Village of Pelham Manor Police station at 4 Penfield Pl.- The parking lot near the Saxon Woods Pool located at 1800 Mamaroneck Ave. in White Plains- The White Plains Police Department Headquarters at 77 Lexington Ave.- The Yorktown Police Department station at 2281 Crompond Rd.- Parking lot No. 3 of the FDR State Park located at 2957 Crompond Rd. in Yorktown.
