GREENBURGH, N.Y. George Coniglio loves to sing and has a first place karaoke certificate displayed proudly on his office wall. Bringing a singing competition to Greenburgh, it seemed, was a natural thing to do.
On Friday, Oct. 14, the Theodore D. Young Community Center presents its sixth annual "Golden Idol," a singing competition geared towards velvety-voiced Westchester residents aged 50 and up.
"The show 'American Idol' is so big that I wanted to bring it to the seniors," said George Coniglio, the director of the senior department at the Theodore D. Young Community Center. "I wanted to showcase them so that they can compete with a level playing field."
Unlike the popular Fox show "American Idol," the judges of "Golden Idol" will remain silent, without praise or criticism, until all participants have sang. Contestants will be judged on singing ability, presentation and audience reaction.
"While I love 'American Idol,' I don't love the judging part of the show," said Coniglio. "It's sort of vindictive. But we do take the judging very seriously here."
Every participant will sing two songs, with the final trio singing again to crown third, second and first place. The winner will receive a paid gig to sing at one of the Community Center's "Friday Afternoon" series.
At last year's "Golden Idol," the contestants belted out a variety of music, including Chinese folk music, gospel, opera, folk rock and classics.
