James Robinson, deputy commissioner of the center, said he was thrilled to be able to open the gymnasium for recreational activities. Work on the Community Center began late last year and was completed in late June.
"There was so much damage and so much work that needed to be done," Robinson said. "It's exciting to have the gym available. It's been the center of recreation in the community for around 40 years. We're excited about the reopening." According to a report by Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner in late June, the $88,000 in funding for the floor was paid for by FEMA because the floor was damaged during a storm related flood. Flooding from Hurricane Irene in August 2011 damaged the gym floor and during the post-storm cleanup, it was learned that the old floor was glued to the concrete with a mastic that contained asbestos. Because of this asbestos, special action was needed to abate the asbestos before reinstalling the gym floor. The repairs to the gymnasium also included a new air conditioning and heating system. The town also received a $169,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to install a solar hot water heating system for the pool. To help reduce the chances of future flooding damaging the Community Center, the Town has applied for grant funding to implement a “flood-proofing” project that would keep flood waters from entering the gym area.
