Hurricane Sandy took power away from about half of Greenburgh's residents by Tuesday, according to a Con Edison report, and it could be up to a week until power is fully restored throughout Westchester County. John Soler and Adam Nadborny, both residents on Greenacres Avenue in Hartsdale, decided to go up and down their street to remove tree limbs from their neighbors' yards and streets Tuesday morning.
"We bought batteries, candles and food before the storm to prepare," Soler said. "But you can't really prepare for a tree falling down on your lawn."
Soler and Nadborny's efforts are what Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino said is the first step to fixing Sandy's damages — clearing roads. Con Edison and DPW crews can't restore power if trees are still blocking the roads, he said.
Other Hartsdale residents couldn't believe how lucky they were.
"The tree that fell across my front yard is the neighbors tree. The way it fell was extremely lucky — if it decided to fall straight, it would've destroyed my house," said Deb Pekarek of Hartsdale.
Greenburgh turned into a maze for drivers Tuesday morning with dozens of roads still blocked off. With MTA Metro-North and buses still out of service, it made it even more difficult for residents to get to work. Nadborny said that as long as the MTA remains closed, he won't be going to work.
West Hartsdale Avenue, which creates a straight path from Greenburgh and Elmsford to Hartsdale and Scarsdale, is blocked off at Pat Capone Road. The Bronx River Parkway also remains closed between the Sprain Brook Parkway and the Virginia Road exit.
