Westchester Student-Athlete Dies At 17 After Battling Cancer

A student-athlete who was entering his senior year at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers has died after a battle with cancer.

Brendan James Maguire, 17, of Patterson died on Monday, Aug 20. He had been diagnosed with osteosarcoma 14 months ago.

He played both basketball and baseball at Kennedy Catholic, where his courage and faith, displayed throughout his illness, inspired all those around him.

He is survived by his parents, Ellen and Rory Maguire; sisters, Meghan and Ciara; maternal grandparents, Joe and Pat McGann; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Catherine and Bernard James Maguire.

His funeral will take place on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at Saint James the Apostle Church in Carmel. Calling hours were held on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at the Balsamo Cordovano Funeral Home in Carmel.
