Rowers Take On the Worlds

Max Meyer-Bosse and Graham Anderson will have interesting How I Spent My Summer Vacation essays to write when they return to school in late summer. Meyer-Bosse, of Westport, and Anderson, of Weston, are spending July in Miami to train for the Junior World Championships next month in Racice, Czech Republic.

The pair left last week to train with team coach Francisco Viacava at the Miami Beach Rowing Club. They will head to Philadelphia on July 24 for a week of training before heading to Racice. The competition runs from Aug. 4-7.

Meyer-Bosse and Anderson will compete in the Men's 4x with Pat Donohue of Philadelphia and Alex Johnson of Seattle. The local duo, who won the Men's Youth 2x at last month's US Youth National Championships, were selected for the national team last month. They also won the Men's 2x at the Junior World Championship Trials, edging Donohue and Johnson.

Their success had no influence on their selection to the national team. There was the possibility that one could make the national team and the other could have been left home. Fortunately, both rowers were selected. "We tried hard not to think about that,'' Meyer-Bosse said.

The rowers are waking at 4 a.m. in Miami, on the water at 4:30 and training 12 hours a day. The key will be for them to get in sync. "On the national level, it's all about strength,'' Max said. "On the international level, it's more about technique. It's matching up the blades and the body so that when you're rowing all you see is one set of blades." Added Graham: "The biggest change is we have two other people to match up with."

Both boys hope the work results in a medal. "It will be a good summer, hopefully,'' Max said.
