Alpine PIP police chase leads to stolen, loaded guns

Jeorge L. Sosa, 29, was being held on $195,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with a host of offenses.

PIP Officer Gregory Kimbro Jr. stopped the 2010 black 4-door BWM around 10:30 a.m. on the southbound side of the parkway near Exit 3 in Alpine for tinted windows and an unspecified moving violation.

While asking Sosa for his license and registration, Kimbro said, he noticed the odor of marijuana. Suddenly, he said, the car sped off.

Units from other towns rushed to the area as Kimbro chased the Beamer in his patrol car south on the parkway, Lt. Michael Coppola said.

Three miles down the road, he said, Kimbro saw the BMW on the right shoulder and Sosa running west into the woods.

On off-duty NYPD officer joined Kimbro in running after him, heading west over Route 9W and into another wooded area north of The Esplanade, Coppola said.

Sosa tossed a handgun away before confronting Kimbro, who had to pepper-spray him, the lieutenant said.

Additional Parkway units and officers from Cresskill Police arrived as Sosa was being placed into custody, he said.

A K9 unit from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office searched the area and found a loaded, semi-automatic, .40-caliber handgun, Coppola said.

Officers securing the stopped vehicle discovered a loaded .22-caliber next to the car, he said.

Both guns were reported stolen out of Pennsylvania nearly 15 years ago, records show.

Inside the Beamer’s trunk, Coppola said, officers found marijuana, duct tape, flexible handcuff restraints and ski masks — all hidden near the spare tire.

Detectives are investigating whether the weapons were used in crimes and whether Sosa might be responsible for any recent criminal incidents, Coppola said.

Sosa, whose most recent address is in the Inwood section of Manhattan north of the George Washington Bridge, is charged with:

• 3 weapons possession counts

• disposing (throwing) weapons

• possession of hollow-point bullets

• 2 counts of receiving stolen property

• 2 counts of resisting arrest

• eluding

• obstruction

• hindering

• marijuana possession
