Rye High Rowers Head To Nationals After Winning State Title

RYE, N.Y. -- The Rye High School Rowers are New York State champions.

The crew earned gold medals and state title in the men’s varsity lightweight four-plus this month and will compete in the 2016 Scholastic Rowing Association of America Nationals in Ohio.

In addition they will compete at the U.S. Rowing National Youth Championships at Mercer Lake, N.J., mid-June.

“We have a lot of work to do in the next 4 weeks, but everyone is excited to keep training,” Coach Stan Nelson said. 

Rye High School Crew will field the following boats and crews at the two events: 

SRAA, Nashport, Ohio, May 27, 18:

  • Men’s Lightweight, Varsity 4-plus: NYS Champions Zach Szabo (coxswain), John Dailey, Tim Rudoph-Math, Jimmy Cronin, Jack Hartman 
  • Men’s Lightweight Varsity 8-plus: Blake McGowan(coxswain), Arthur Burke, Teddy Clark, Andy Gomez, Alex Farres-Centano, Troy Gilman, Ethan Fogarty, Hall Luthringer, Victor Gomez
  • Women’s Lightweight Varsity 4-plus: Lily McLoughlin (coxswain), Abby Foresman, Nola Storey, Shoshi Daniels, Erica Kinstel

U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships, Mercer Lake, N.J., June 9-13:

  • Men’s Lightweight Varsity 4-plus, Zach Szabo (coxswain), John Dailey, Tim Rudoph-Math, Jimmy Cronin, Jack Hartman 

To qualify as a lightweight at the NY State Scholastic Championships in Saratoga, the rowers had to weigh in and be certified prior to rowing at under 150 pounds for men and 130 pounds for women.

Rye Crew’s big take away at the recent New York State Championship in Saratoga Springs was the first place finish by the men’s lightweight 4-plus against 14 teams from across the state. 

The Gold victory was impressive as Rye High School Crew won by open water, 18.5 seconds ahead of Pelham. 

The men’s lightweight 8-plus boat qualified for SRRA with a solid performance in time trials on Saturday. 

Their championship race on Sunday was cancelled due to windy conditions so their time from Saturday brought them the women’s lightweight varsity 4-plus qualified for SRAA in time trials on Saturday in a group with 19 boats.
