Gunther Raimund went from being a squatter refusing to leave a hotel in Fredericksburg, to a cooperative arrestee, to a runaway whose feet failed him on Thursday afternoon, leading to his arrest.

Shortly before 12:30 p.m. on April 4, a deputy from the Stafford County Sheriff's Office was called to Motel 6 on Warrenton Road, where a guest - later identified as Raimund - refused to leave, despite check out having passed hours earlier.

The 24-year-old - who was wanted for failing to appear in court for a previous offense - was advised of his status by the deputy and was taken into custody without incident. During a search of him following his arrest, officials say that they found controlled substances on him.

According to the sheriff's office, during his trip to the Rappahannock Regional Jail, Raimund readily confessed there were additional drugs in the room he was staying at, going so far as to offer to point out exactly where they were hidden.

The deputy turned around and the two headed back to Motel 6, where Raimund was true to his word, and additional controlled substances were recovered, leading to his final gambit.

While he was being escorted, Raimund thought twice about his cooperation and unexpectedly did a full 180 and sprinted in the opposite direction, with the deputy in tow, though gravity had other plans.

A spokesperson for the sheriff's office said that as the deputy was about to regain control of him, Raimund tripped on his own shoes, swiftly ending the pursuit.

"Raimund advised he ran because it would 'keep him out of jail for a little longer,' they added. "While that was true, those five extra seconds of freedom earned him another charge."

Raimund was charged with possession of controlled substances, obstruction of justice, and served on an outstanding warrant. He is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
