Greenburgh School District Cuts Winter Break By 3 Days

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Greenburgh Central 7 School District is cutting three days from its winter recess in February to make up for the days lost because of Hurricane Sandy, according to Greenburgh Superintendent Ronald Ross.

Greenburgh Central 7 students will now have a four-day weekend instead of a full week off from school. School will be open Feb. 18, 19 and 20 and close Feb. 21 and 22 for the remainder of the break, Ross said.

According to the New York State Education Department, state schools must operate no fewer than 180 days during the year. Even a declaration of a State of Emergency, declared by both Greenburgh and Elmsford officials, does not authorize districts to operate an annual session of fewer than 180 days.

While many schools designate several days in the calendar for snow days, districts were not prepared for week-long school closures to occur at the end of October. Other nearby school districts, such as Irvington, were also forced to cut into winter recess.

Edgemont school district superintendent staff said they have not decided for sure whether they'll need to cut from break. If it's necessary, the school will follow a make-up day protocol: opening April 1 — the Monday following Easter — and then cutting days into spring break, March 25-29.

While the Elmsford School District was lucky to regain power sooner than Greenburgh and Edgemont and lost only three days of school, board President Matthew Evans said just one or two snow days could force the school into trimming the break.

"If another snow day were to occur sometime between now and end of season, we would have to look at the calendar to see which breaks to remove from," Evans said. "Traditionally, we would take away from one of the Memorial Day extended weekends or spring break."
