Pajama Partyers Read in Elmsford School

ELMSFORD, N.Y. – One Elmsford school is bringing the bedroom to the classroom.

More than two dozen tots cozied up in their favorite pj’s Thursday at the Carl L. Dixson Primary School and listened as high-schoolers read a variety of bedtime stories.

The hour-long pajama party reading event was part of the district’s “Born to Read” series, an annual program designed to get children and their parents more involved in reading.

“We are trying to promote early literacy,” said Katie Bounassisi, event organizer and Dixson kindergarten and pre-school teacher. “And we want parents to understand that reading to your child is important.”

Outfitted in their slippers, bath robes and pajama pants, children went from classroom to classroom and listened as Alexander Hamilton High School students took turns reading books like “My Daddy Snores” and “M is for Monster.” In the gymnasium, Ardsley Library had set up a table, giving parents a chance to sign up for a library card.

Thursday’s pajama party themed reading was the third and final “Born to Read” event of the year. Parents and grandparents raved about the reading series.

“It’s terrific,” Plonnie Jones said as her two grandchildren, Justin, 3, and Jason, 5,  listened on. “This is great for the kids.”

Alexander Hamilton senior Shannon Toombs, who volunteered her night reading to the children, said she got involved in the program in years past as a way to fill her community service requirements for the National Honor Society.

But even after her community service hours were up, she came back to spend time with the children.

“I love working with kids,” Toombs said. “It’s a lot of fun.”
