GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- It was quite the sight for Gayle Williams when she went to see her son, Reese, play for the SUNY Albany basketball team over the weekend.

Williams unexpectedly saw a poster of her son hanging up inside the SEFCU Arena, where the Great Danes play. The poster highlighted Reece since he was named a captain this season.

Reese joined the team as a walk-on and is the second walk-on to be named a captain by Coach Will Brown. He was named to the Honors Court by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

“Reece has been committed to our program and has represented our team in a positive manner on the court, in the classroom, and in the community,” said  Brown. “He is very deserving of this honor.”

Williams said her and her husband, Terry, were pleased when he was named a captain.

"Reece counsels others on choosing their classes wisely, he helps his teammates with managing courseloads, he prays with them, and he is just a good friend to them. It makes sense for him to be a captain," Williams said.

At Woodlands, Reece was a member of the National Honors Society and led his team to a Section 1 Class B Championship and was named All-Conference.

Reece was recruited by other colleges, but he wanted to play Division 1 basketball. Before he attended, Williams said he spent all summer working out and became the team's first walk-on in more than 10 years.

"Walking into the SEFCU arena and seeing a poster of your child that's larger than life was truly breathtaking. Reece had not told us about it, and it was such a huge surprise. We are just so very proud of how Reece has had such an impact upon the team, even without spending much time on the court," his mother said.
