The morning rain yielded hot sunshine just in time for Elmsford's Memorial Day parade and ceremony.
As a dog found shade beneath a tree and children poured water in each other's hair, the town residents assembled at Village Hall to pay tribute to veterans both past and present.
"It is fitting and proper that we gather here today to remember and honor those brave men and women who have given their lives so that we may live in a free and prosperous United States," said Elmsford Mayor Robert Williams. "At this very moment, half way around the world in some of the most desolate places you can ever imagine, Americans are fighting and dying in the name of freedom."
Crowds gathered despite the humidity as town officials sermonized about America's war heroes and honored their sacrifices for the country.
"We must look to the future as well as the past," said Mayor Williams. "In today's world, freedom comes cloaked in uncertainty. America still relies on its sons and daughters to protect our liberty. The cost of independence remains high."
Grand Marshall Louis DeFeo of the U.S. Army Air Force attended, as did former Elmsford Mayor Arthur DeAngelis, town trustee William Zimkin, and Alexander Hamilton High School principal Marc Baiocco.
